The project continues

Who we are

Thirteen passionate, driven, and socially aware masters students enrolled within the Business Creation and Entrepreneurship in Biomedicine program at Chalmers. As a part of the first year of our education we design, manage and carry out a social entrepreneurship project of our choice. The 2013 class has chosen to work in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on building a framework for entrepreneurial education in the informal sector.

What we do

In an increasingly global world it is important to use the dissolution of borders to invest in disenfranchised communities. Essential characteristics of the investments we make must be sustainability and empowerment; in order for the impact to inspire real, lasting change individuals must become solutions. Investing with knowledge is the most sustainable investment that can be made in order ignite social change and encourage structural development. The goal of the 2013 class is to develop an educational framework in which we adapt our entrepreneurial knowledge to meet the needs and abilities of individuals in an informal suburb of the city of Dar es Salaam.

The class is joining forces with Mgunga Mwamnyenyelwa, founder of the Baba Watoto community center in Dar es Salaam, as well as teacher, artist, and collaborator to UNICEF and SIDA. The class will hold a three-week event at the community center in June 2012. The first two weeks will follow the Theatre of the Oppressed methodology in order to determine the true needs of the community and develop a connection with the people. Week three will consist of entrepreneurial workshops designed and hosted by the GIBBS class. In order to develop content and find effective teaching methods the class is working with Intize, Gothenburg University’s education department, and several social workers and independent teachers that have a wealth of experience working and teaching in informal communities.

By participating in this project, the class aims to build bridges where none previously existed, develop our understanding of the challenges that face our growing world, and question the socially accepted definition of what it means to be an entrepreneur.
